As nurses, we always try to make our patients smile through the difficult times they are facing. One emergency room (ER) nurse has gone above and beyond since the pandemic.

Thomas “Zach” Zacharias, an ER nurse at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah, was looking for a way to put a smile on his patient’s faces during the pandemic.

As most nurses know, masks can make it hard to express yourself. In an interview, Zack said, “COVID took away 50% of my ability to express myself so we went up, and we found another 50% we could do something with.”

So, what did he do? He cut his hair into a mohawk. His children paint different designs on his mohawk every day he works. He said it takes about an hour and a half to two hours per design.

Connecting with his patients is what continues to drive each new design! Zach said, “You get to know them. They get to know you. You make a connection much faster.” He went on to say, “They love it, and their loved ones loved it, and I think that’s just one of those things that connects us.”

Some of his designs include:

He has now had over 150 designs. He shares them on social media through his Instagram page where he goes by MohawkNurse. You can see his unique designs and follow him to see what new designs he comes up!
